Knowledge outcomes:By the end of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. Explain the relationship between cells, tissues, organs and systems.
  2. State, with examples that organs are a group of tissues that coordinate to do a specific job.
  3. Identify a variety of organ systems in animals and recall that they are made up of different organs with a special purpose working together.
  4. Recall the word equation for respiration.
  5. Recall function of each of the major body systems (respiratory, circulatory,digestive, excretory, skeletal).
    1. Complete a summary of the function and parts of each body system listed above and include a picture of each one.
  6. Label a diagram of the respiratory system (trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli).
  7. Explain how air enters and exists the lungs.
  8. Describe the process that occurs inside an alveolus.
  9. State the function of each of the following components of the circulatory system: arteries, veins, capillaries, heart., blood.
  10. Describe the function of the main components of blood (plasma, red and white blood cells and platelets).
  11. Give examples of life saving technology that have arisen as a result of improved understanding of the circulatory system (artificial heart valves ECG and artificial blood).
  12. Outline the function of the following nutrients in keeping the body healthy: carbohydrates, proteins, fats and oils.
  13. Label a diagram of the digestive system.
  14. Outline the function of the organs of the digestive system.
    1. Create a powerpoint of the function(s) of the organs of the digestive system.
  15. Recall the 3 main functions of the skeletal system (support, protection of internal organs and providing anchor points for muscles.Note: students are not expected to be able to name the bones of the human body – this is covered in PDHPE
  16. Describe the function of the excretory system.
  17. Label the urinary system.
  18. Recall the function of the following parts of the urinary system: kidney, bladder, ureters, urethra.
    1. Create a Blabberize video of the function of the parts of the urinary system.
  19. Outline the contributions made by one of the following Australian to the field of medicine: Victor Chang, Fiona Wood, Barry Marshall.
  20. Describe some careers in the area of health Science.

Skills outcomes By the end of this unit, students should be able to:
  1. Interpret the results of experiments carried out by Boyle, Lavoisier and Priestly to investigate the process of respiration.
  2. Carry out an experiment to measure the amount of energy in a sample of food and outline sources of error.
  3. Extract information from flow diagrams, texts and audio/visual resources.
  4. Organise data using a variety of methods.
