    Fiona Wood
Fiona Wood was born on the 2nd of February 1958. There was a tourist attack in Bali, many innocent people had got burns during this attack. The development for skin cell transplant technology had begun in 1990, when Fiona Wood was treating patients for serious burn injuries. When treating large burn injuries it involves applying cultured skin in the form of sheets to the wound. The skin sheets are grown from skin cells obtained from the patients but usually take days to produce. Fiona Wood had found a unique solution for the burns. She is worldwide known for this. She is currently the director of the West Australian Burn Service and cofounder/director of Clinical Cell Culture. The cure for burns is called ‘spray-on skin’, this spray helped greatly and reduced the death rate of the Bali bombings. Fiona Wood’s method allows for the rapid administration of skin cells, speeding up the heeling process and significantly reducing scaring. Other types of solutions for burnt skin required 21 days to produce enough cells to cover major burns. Fiona’s technique has cut this time to just 5 days. Research has shown that the scar formation is significantly reduced if the wound heals quickly. With Fiona Wood’s fast healing spray there is only 4% chance of getting a hypertrophic scar. With the other types of solutions there is 70% chance. Fiona’s aim was to reduce scaring and improve the patient’s ability to move and function in society.
